Nest Audit

A Backpacker Experience for Everyone

A hostel on the Australian coast

Guest experience audit · Arrival walkthrough · Activities & breakfast redesign

A backpacker-style hostel on the Australian coast. Plenty of potential, little proposition: reviews hovered at seven on Booking.com and Hostelworld, there was no budget to change anything guests could see, and there was urgency. Improve the service to fill more beds.

We read every review the way you read a letter. And what guests were asking for wasn't a different property. It was a different experience. Families, groups of friends and travellers who had outgrown dorm life were arriving for what only a hostel gives you —the shared kitchen, the breakfast table, the conversation with a stranger that turns into a plan for the day— and then wanting to sleep the way you sleep in a hotel. Quiet. Good sheets. A room that feels looked after. The hostel wasn't offering either fully: not enough connection, not enough comfort.

So we designed the experience around that exact combination: the social life of a hostel with the rest of a hotel. A walk through the property on arrival, so every guest knew how life worked there. A map of the town, showing everything it already had to offer and no one was telling. An activities calendar to plan a stay around. And a breakfast that stopped being basic and became a shared moment: making waffles among strangers, on the same budget as before. Meanwhile, the rooms stayed to one standard: clean, quiet, ready. The connection happened downstairs. The rest happened upstairs.

Within a month. Same property, different experience.

Within a month, the hostel went from seven to nine. The property didn't change. How it felt to be there did. From a one-night stopover to a place where backpackers, families and friends could share a table in the morning and still sleep well at night.

That is a Nest Audit: seeing your space through the eyes of whoever arrives, finding the moments that break, and redesigning them with what you already have.
